The starters at Sassafras are great for sharing, and they allow for easy picking as you enjoy a conversation at the dinner table. You could start simple with familiar finger foods like fried pickles, chips, pimento cheese fondue, or a basket of fries – which can be made from regular or sweet potatoes. The cornmeal-breaded fried green tomatoes come topped with honey mustard, while the hot and spicy pork tenderloin features crumbled gorgonzola, grits, and a buffalo sauce bite.

From the Land

For the main course, Sassafras Southern Bistro offers a selection of hearty meats like the filet mignon, an eight-ounce center-cut Angus tenderloin accompanied by mashed potatoes, asparagus, house pimento, and a decadent sauce bearnaise. The Sassafras Fried Chicken comes stuffed with ham, cheese, spinach, and onion gravy, and plated with brussels sprouts and mac and cheese. If you’re a fan of beef wellington, consider the beef enroute, a tenderloin baked in puff pastry with cremini mushrooms and gorgonzola then drizzled with bearnaise.

From the Water

If you prefer seafood, the kitchen at Sassafras has you covered. You can always go with a classic like the Charleston shrimp and grits, which features spicy Tasso ham and stone-ground grits coated in a velouté of chicken and herbs. The pan-seared scallops are delightfully tender, and are served atop creamy parmesan risotto, while the salmon and lump blue crab benefit from a lime-cilantro beurre blanc. Mahi can be ordered grilled or blackened, while the crab cakes sport a sweet corn relish. The yellowfin ahi tuna is served rare, topped in soy and wasabi mayonnaise, and alongside asparagus over grits.

Sassafras Southern Bistro is open six days per week starting at 5 p.m. from Monday through Friday. They open at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday. Sassafras is located downtown in One City Plaza, at 103 N.
